My name is Burke Brewer and I am a maker, counselor, and creative entrepreneur making my mark in Knoxville, TN. Though my professional training is in counseling, I stumbled onto garment sewing in 2011 out of frustration with RTW clothing. I vowed to create my own professional wardrobe and set out to learn everything I could about sewing. Fast-forward to 2016 and I now make all of my own clothing and teach others to do the same.
I learned firsthand the transformative effects that sewing has on your confidence and self-esteem. After years of body consciousness and shame, I began to enjoy dressing myself and creating beautiful garments. After my divorce I realized that sewing had saved me during one of the most difficult moments in my life. I knew that I wanted to share with other women the massive impact of my creative hobby, and in 2015 founded Modern Seamstress.
Modern Seamstress is here to empower women to love their bodies and delight in dressing their bodies. I teach sewing classes of all skill levels both in person and online, and am currently working on a capsule collection of thoughtful pieces for the modern women to be released Spring 2017.
In my spare time I am CEO of Work Matters, a disability employment counseling agency, and Modern Studio, a flexible maker/venue space that supports the local arts and creative communities. I am very proud of my role as a female CEO and write about the trials of being self-employed. I also frequently appear in speaking engagements, and work to empower female & creative entrepreneurs to become more successful. I hold a BA in Psychology, and MS in Counseling from the University of Tennessee and advocate strongly for the benefits of creative pursuits on personal well-being.
